In his long-awaited decision, Canadian Chief Justice Bauman wrote that “the harms associated with the practice are endemic; they are inherent,” and that the harms found in polygynous societies “are not simply the product of individual misconduct; they arise inevitably out of the practice.” He further stated, “there is no such thing as so-called “good polygamy.” He got it right, time to celebrate, congratulations Canada!

Dear Friends, The following report from the International NGO Council on Violence Against Children may be of interest to some of you: ‘Violating Children’s Rights: Harmful Practices based on tradition, culture, religion or superstition …The report first looks at the definition and scope of harmful traditional, cultural and religious practices violating children’s rights. (Dear All, As I post this, I am listening to Sally Armstrong on CBC’s The Current with Anna-Maria Tremonte talk about how many little girls are being raped every day; but, also that 1/2 the population in Afghanistan is under the age of 30; and, how social media is helping with the discussion on how to stop violence against women and little girls; and, it is young people who are leading this discussion. According to Sally, when Canada’s Prime Minister Stephan Harper stood up to Afghanistan’s Karzai when Karzai announced he had signed a bill for Sharia Law in Afghanistan...
According to the World Health Organization, 6,000 girls are circumcised every day! What a travesty! We’ve had reports of Muslim girls being circumcised in Canada by Muslim surgeons. If someone would be brave enough to tell me the name of just ONE of these fundamentalist Muslim surgeons, I would see that he/she is investigated and put in prison faster than you could blink! You would think the world is falling back into the mental parameters of the stone age–actually maybe as recent as the Salem witch hunts in New England of early America! When will barbarism toward people be replaced with compassion and caring. The comments on the WLUML web range from calls for peaceful resolutions to holding the 200 people who watched this stoning accountable. Maybe they were coerced into watching. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/africa/2012/07/201273021254165201.html...
(Note: I find the action of this defense attorney absolutely repulsive. When is being “politically correct” too much so? I believe she should be fired. The hijab was designed by Muslim men to hide the identity of Muslim women and take away their rights to good health and safety as well as their identity! Thank you, USNews & WLUML, for bringing this to the attention of the world.)
