In his long-awaited decision, Canadian Chief Justice Bauman wrote that “the harms associated with the practice are endemic; they are inherent,” and that the harms found in polygynous societies “are not simply the product of individual misconduct; they arise inevitably out of the practice.” He further stated, “there is no such thing as so-called “good polygamy.” He got it right, time to celebrate, congratulations Canada!

Carol Christie’s story of escaping a malicious, Mormon polygamous cult near Owen Sound, ON, has been featured on CTV’s W5 and will soon be available when her book is released in early April, Property! The True Horror Story of a Polygamous Church Wife Following is an essay she has written for our blog: DRAWING THE LINE Although Section 293 of the Criminal Code, upholding and maintaining polygamy as an offense, has been ruled constitutional and valid, there appears to be a continued groundswell for change. Certain individuals within the fields of media, law, and others, want to see the lifestyle...

Dear Assistant Deputy Minister Claire Avison, Thank you for your email dated January 2, 2013, which is included below and which you made in reply to my email dated November 8, 2012, addressed to Premier Clark and copied to the Hon. Don McRae. The subject title was ”Children Denied Education at Bountiful.” You had, however, already answered my November 8 email, utilizing the same letter. You sent the original on December 10, 2012, your reference # 163527. Obviously a mix-up occurred within your office staff when my November 8 email was forwarded to you for reply. I replied to your December 10 email on December 31, under the...
Claire Avison, Asst. Deputy Minister, Governance Legislation and Regulation Division Dear Assistant Deputy Minister Avison, Thank you for your email dated December 10, 2012, reference # 163527, in which you describe the arrangements made for the education of the children who attended Bountiful Elementary-Secondary School (BESS). This school was closed on the orders of their jailed American prophet, Warren Jeffs, presently serving a life sentence for the rape of two underage girls he selected as his “celestial wives.” It is good to hear that the majority of BESS students are now enrolled in distributed learning programs offered by public boards of education, and even better news that some...
Hi Nancy: Lately, I’m wondering if I would do better in terms of public reaction and outrage if I were a pig. Mind you, I HAVE had pretty decent media coverage, and I’m not knocking the efforts of the journalistic types. It just seems to me there’s something wrong with human nature when the CTV W5 piece aired last Saturday on abuse of pigs is receiving more attention and comment than any other of their stories in recent years. There were followup pieces on the news over the weekend and again last night. Compare this to the delayed reaction following...
