Absolutely sick of polyamorists rubbing their “sexual” rights in our faces; and, journalists who get their facts wrong!

Hello Peter,

Sorry, Peter but you have your facts wrong on Bountiful.  Winston Blackmore and James Oler were charged with one count each of practicing polygamy on January 7, 2009.  Justice Sunni Stromberg-Stein dismissed the charges on September 23, 2009.  AG Wally Oppal then asked the Lieutenant Governor to send section 293 to trial to test it’s constitutionality.

A deadline date of January 28, 2010 was set for all Interveners (titled Interested Persona) to submit their affidavits.  This deadline was extended due to more groups wanting to come on board.  In the end 12 groups/individuals became involved with one dropping out at the beginning of the trial which started on November 22, 2010.

Those groups that argued that sec. 293 should be upheld and found constitutional were:

Attorney General for BC

Attorney General for Canada

Stop Polygamy in Canada

British Columbia Teachers’ Federation  (BCTF)

Real Women of Canada

Christian Legal Fellowship

Beyond Borders, Ensuring Global Justice for Children Beyond Borders

Canadian Coalition for the Rights of Children & David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights

Those groups that wanted the law struck down were:

The Amicus—appointed by Gov of BC

Canadian Association for Free Expression

James Oler and the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS)

Canadian Polyamory Advocacy Association

Those groups that wanted the law “read down”—not in the judges mandate but he heard them anyway:

West Coast Legal Action Fund

BC Civil Liberties Association

Chief Justice Bauman’s decision was handed down November 23, 2011.

I’m sick and tired of articles like yours that extol the “consent” rights of adults to do what they want sexually.  Where children are involved, Canada has signed and ratified the International Convention on the Rights of the Child.  You know as well as I do that in the human experience of groups there is always an alpha male and alpha female; also, children are more apt to be abused by those adults in a group who are not their biological parents.

I really think you should do some more research before you put your pen to paper.
